Prepares the basic emergency medical technician (EMT) to begin paramedic training. Emphasizes review of EMT knowledge, human anatomy and physiology, math calculation, and electrocardiograph (ECG) interpretation. Provides the basic EMT with intensive scenario-based training. ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT PARAMEDIC THEORY I

Recommended Preparation: 6 months of work experience as an EMT-B.

Prerequisite: EMTP 115 or equivalent.

Corequisite: EMTP 200L and EMTP 202.

Limitation on Enrollment: Enrollment is limited to students accepted into the paramedic program.

Offers first half of paramedic didactic training. Follows current National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards (NEMSES) published by U.S. Department of Transportation. Includes preparatory, airway, assessment, pharmacology, and medical modules. [D; CSU]

ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT PARAMEDIC LABORATORY I

EMS COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE I

50. Provides Emergency Medical Services (EMS) observational experience on an ambulance or fire apparatus. Introduces students to EMS patients in a secure and controlled environment. Includes the opportunity for students to practice Advanced Life Support skills on human patients, as County and Accreditation regulations allow. [D; CSU]

EMS COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE II

Prerequisite: EMTP 200 or equivalent; EMTP 200L or equivalent; EMTP 202 or equivalent.

Corequisite: EMTP 201 and EMTP 201L.

Provides Emergency Medical Services (EMS) observational experience on an ambulance or fire apparatus. Builds on experience gained from EMTP-202 and continues to provide students with a secure and controlled environment to practice Advanced Life Support skills on human patients, as County and Accreditation regulations allow. EMTP 225

HOSPITAL CLINICAL EXPERIENCE FOR PARAMEDICS

3 UNITS

Prerequisite: EMTP 201 or equivalent.

Limitation on Enrollment: Enrollment is limited to students accepted into the Paramedic Program who have completed the criminal background check, vaccination record review and drug screening as required by each hospital provider.

Laboratory 9.50 hours

Offered: SUMMER

Provides instruction to enhance student's knowledge of emergency care in a clinical setting; opportunity to assist and observe in emergency rooms, as well as other areas of the facility under direct supervision of hospital staff. Takes place in varied shift assignments. [D; CSU]

FIELD TRAINING FOR PARAMEDICS I

Provides practicum experience for students to participate in the provision of emergency medical care supervised by a preceptor. Performs leadership duties, employs assessment and communication techniques and utilizes psychomotor skills (i.e. intubation, medication administration, ECG monitoring) on human patients. [D; CSU]

FIELD TRAINING FOR PARAMEDICS II

Prerequisite: EMTP 225 or equivalent.

Lecture 0.50 hours, laboratory 13.50 hours

Offered: FALL

Provides practicum experience for students to participate and lead emergency medical care supervised by a preceptor. Students will continue to demonstrate their proficiency in leadership, assessment and psychomotor skills. Provides the Capstone portion of the internship in which 50 patient contacts as the team leader must be documented. [D; CSU]

EMTP 250

PARAMEDIC NREMT REFRESHER

2 UNITS

Pass/No Pass or Grade is Allowed

Limitation on Enrollment: Enrollment is limited to students having prior EMT or paramedic course completion or certification.

Lecture 1.50 hour, laboratory 2 hours

Offered: ALL

Provides all continuing education hours required for biannual paramedic recertification. Follows California EMS Authority (CAEMSA) requirements for content directly or indirectly related to ALS patient care. Follows National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (NREMTP) requirements for content in patient assessment, pharmacology, airway management, cardiology, medical and behavioral emergencies, trauma, obstetrics and pediatrics and EMS Operations. Students will receive certifications in Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) and Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP). [D; CSU]
